SUP, Stretch and Sip

SUP1You never know who you’re going to run into in the Hamptons.  We arrived at a friend’s house and my old Physique 57 instructor Magen Banwart, the founder of MB Fitness and Mind, Body Reboot program was there too.  She used to teach this amazing yin yoga class, a stretch practice that focuses on restoring the body and calming the mind.  She mentioned that she teaches a 90 minute stand up paddle board (SUP), stretch, and core fusion class in East Hampton.  I was intrigued and it just so happens that I live across the marina.

I had never paddle boarded before this class but I knew I was in good hands.  Magen teams up with Gina Bradley from Paddle Diva.  Don’t let the name confuse you, men paddle here too.  The class is broken down like this: 40 minutes-SUP lesson and paddle workout; 30 minutes-Full body core-driven workout on your SUP; 20 minutes-MB Yin Yoga seated stretches and the class ends with an organic green juice.  I brought my boyfriend and 2 friends to try the class.  The weather conditions were not ideal for SUP.  The waves made it even more challenging to balance on the board.  I decided to forgo the lesson and just go for it.  Needless to say, I fell in a lot.  I loved what Magen said to me that it’s ok to fall just get back up and paddle.  Isn’t that just the perfect metaphor for life?

SUP is so calming and the scene is just serene.  You feel like you’re floating on the water while you’re engaging your core the entire time.  If you’ve ever taken a core fusion or Physique 57 class, the moves are very similar.  There is a lot of pulsing, balancing and holding a pose while engaging your core.  It was a very challenging yet fun class.  I went for the second time last Saturday and what a difference the weather makes!  It was sunny and warm and I felt more confident the second time around.  Once I got the paddle board basics down, I could really focus on the workout.  I love the fact that you’re working out outside on the water.  Magen is there rooting you on and you feel nothing but support from Gina and her staff.  It was one of the best classes I’ve ever taken.  The best part was at the end of class, we were rewarded with a delicious organic green juice made by Magen herself.  If you’re ever in the Hamptons, try Magen’s SUP, stretch and sip class or rent a paddle board at Paddle Diva!
