San Sebastián

sansebastian1

San Sebastián has been on my travel bucket list ever since I studied abroad in Spain 12 years ago.  I couldn’t go then because I knew I would need a decent amount of time to fully appreciate the gastronomy, the scenic beaches and all the sites.  I’m so grateful that I had the opportunity to go this year as an adult versus 12 years ago as an early twenty-something.  As an adult, I could afford to eat at the 6th best restaurant in the world (post to follow), appreciate a good blood sausage without gagging, and revel in the sentimental moments between girlfriends.  I know it’s not fair to compare but San Sebastián reminded me a lot of San Francisco.  The weather was similar with spotty rain showers mixed with spurts of sun.  The food scene is on; there are more michelin starred restaurants in a city only 2nd to Japan.  There’s also a very chill surfer vibe that you just don’t get in any other major city in Spain.  I can’t describe fully into words about why this trip was one of my top five.  It was probably because it was the perfect combination of people on this trip.  As I grow older, the right people in my life has become paramount in everything I do in life including travel.  San Sebastián had the perfect combination of nature (beach and mountains), food, and wine.  I’m at the point of my life where I don’t take anything for granted and I know how lucky I am to have been able to go to this magical place with two of my best girlfriends.  These were some of my favorite moments from the trip.

The rain in Spain doesn’t stay mainly on the plain.

First stop on our pintxos tour consisted of mussels and cider.

sansebastian5

Gandarias had the best pintxos and the best rioja wine for only 1.75 euro a glass!

Pintxos are fancy tapas in the Basque Country.

The blood sausage one was divine even though it sounds scary.

La Cepa is a pintxos bar that the locals go to.

We took a day trip to the rioja valley and went to Marqués de Riscal designed by Frank Gehry.

sansebastian14

We went on a winery tour.

The best part was the tasting.

Our local friends took us to Petritegi which is a cider house.  This is how you get your glass of cider.

sansebastian17

They also have amazing food. For about 30 euros you get 4 courses including unlimited cider.
