Slovakia

Highlights From Slovakia

I’ve been to Slovakia 4 times now and every time I go, there is something new to see.  My boyfriend is from Bratislava which is the capital of Slovakia and until this past trip, I had only been there.  This time, we drove an hour East to Bojnice to see the beautiful castle and Čičmany, a tiny village in the mountains.  Here are the highlights from my week in Slovakia.

I didn’t sleep very much on my over night flight to Vienna so having fried potatoes and wine first thing didn’t really help the situation. We went to a wine festival in Modra and drank burčiak which is young wine. It tastes a lot like hard apple cider. The festival marks the end of the harvest and the beginning of the wine making season.

Then we ate this. Yum. Roasted duck with cabbage and potato crepes. This is usually served on special occasions. Next was food coma.

Slovak candies. I don’t know what the signs say but I think it’s very pretty.

This is the Hlavné námestie which is the main square in Bratislava. During Christmas time, there is a Christmas market where all the locals come for mulled wine and snacks. This photo was filtered with snapseed my new favorite app!

On the way to see the Bojnice castle, we saw this castle on the highway. Slovakia is known for its many castles. I think this one was very dramatic coming out of the rock.

Maybe it’s because I’m American and the only castle I’ve ever seen was the one at Disney world but I think castles are amazing. I just can’t believe this was someone’s home.

This was the back view and it’s a castle on a moat! I thought that was only real in the movies!

When my boyfriend said painted houses, I didn’t quite get what he was saying. Who cares if people paint their houses different colors. When we drove through the little village, I got the picture.

By the way, that’s me eating an apple my boyfriend picked from a random tree. Because why not.

On the way home, we stopped by a sheep’s farm. My boyfriend’s eyes lit up. He apparently grew up eating unpasteurized dairy products. I let him enjoy his cheese while I had a lovely yogurt. It was delicious but it definitely tasted different than the yogurt you buy at the supermarket.
