Bali Part I

Karangasem, located in the North Eastern part of Bali, is a place that I’ve wanted to make a point in visiting this time around.  I’ve seen photos of Pura Lempuyang or “The Gateway to Heaven” that look like they were photoshopped.  I took the ferry from Gili T to Padang Bai pier in Bali and I stayed at this amazing Villa (read more here).  The driver from the villa picked me up which is the best way to get around Bali.  It’s the most convenient and affordable way to get from one end of the island to the other. I noticed immediately upon driving around that it wasn’t as crowded as I had expected.  This was highly contrasted to Canggu which is located South of Bali.

When I told the driver I only had one day and I wanted to see the gate, he was taken aback at how short my stay was.  He asked me why I wasn’t staying longer and I said that I had to be in Ubud the next day and that my stay in Bali was only 10 days in total.  Of course, looking back I should’ve stayed longer but that’s the problem with travel, there are so many places to explore!  He suggested that I drop my bags off at the villa, freshen up and that he would drive me to the gate which was a 2-hour drive.

During the drive, I was worried because it had just started to rain.  He assured me that the Gods would be in my favor. He was right because of the rain, I had the entire gate to myself and just as I got to the top, the clouds opened up for my photo op.  It was a pretty magical moment.  After the gate, my driver said that I had to stop by the other major attraction in the area that wasn’t even on my radar, Tirta Gangga, the water palace.

Even though my 24 hours in Karangasem was short, it was sweet and I got a little taste of a wonderful part of Bali that deserves more time to explore.  I was working my way South so next stop Ubud.
