DIY Nautical Knot Necklace

nauticalnecklace1The inspiration from this necklace came from when I was taking a weekend sailing course over the Fall.  Oh yes, fun fact, I’m a certified ASA Sailor.  A part of the training was learning how to tie sailing knots and what struck me was how functional yet beautiful they were.  I decided that one day, I would turn it into a DIY project and make something out of one of the knots I learned.  I made the necklace with black rope because I didn’t want it to be too literal but if you did, they sell all kinds of color combinations.  I wore the necklace out last Saturday and people kept asking me if it was a part of my shirt.  I like that it looks a little avante garde and a departure from the necklaces I usually wear.  It’s so easy and it only took me 30 minutes to make.  If you know basic sewing it’s a breeze.

nauticalnecklace2You will need:

  • 1 yard of nautical rope (I bought mine at West Marine)
  • 1 yard of satin ribbon, the color of your choice
  • Needle and thread
  • Scissors

nauticalnecklace31. Take the two ends of the rope and line them up.

nauticalnecklace4 2. Pull the ends towards the bottom center. It should look like a pretzel.

nauticalnecklace53. Starting with the right side, bring the end under the loop.

nauticalnecklace64. Pull the end through.

nauticalnecklace75. Now, the left side. Pull the end through the loop.

nauticalnecklace86. Pull through.

nauticalnecklace97. Pull both ends so that the knot is tight.

nauticalnecklace108. Make a little loop at the end. With a threaded needle, sew the ends of the loop together. Repeat on the other side.

nauticalnecklace119. Measure the necklace around your neck and decide how much ribbon you need to secure the back.
